Sakurajima
Ominously towering over the city of Kagoshima, Sakurajima is an active, constantly erupting stratovolcano. Sakurajima means "Cherry Blossom Island" in Japanese. It sure does not evoke the pleasant vibes of cherry blossoms, nor is it an island. It used to be, though - a massive eruption in 1914 buried nearby settlements under metres of ash (as seen by the Kurokami buried torii gate) and connected Sakurajima to Kyushu, thus transforming it into a peninsula. Our planet is constantly shifting, evolving, not always visible to our momentarily brief lifespans, but sometimes it is.
