Kagoshima
Under the shadow of the active stratovolcano Sakurajima lies the city of Kagoshima. The city gets covered in ash at every eruption, while the threat of a major eruption looms. But it's not just natural forces - Kagoshima was devastated during World War II. Yet, through all this adversity, the city and its people battle on. This spirit is reflected in the city itself, and it's unlike any place else in Japan. There are no skyscrapers, monuments or glittering neon, but it's just as pristine and well developed.
